Your Metabolism Lecture
Eat
breakfast!
Your
metabolism will not wake up until you eat. In order to have
your body burning calories at its maximum rate for the maximum
amount of time each day, you need to eat right when you wake
up to get your metabolism moving.
Top
Three Excuses People Give for Skipping Breakfast:
1)
“I don't have time.”
You don't have time not to make time
for breakfast because it is so critical to your metabolism!
2)
“When I eat breakfast, I'm hungry all day.”
You feel this way because your body is revving
your metabolism and using all the calories you consume, so you
feel hungry more often. Hunger is not a bad thing! From a metabolic
perspective, hunger means your body has used what you've given
it and is revved up and ready for more fuel.
And in reality, you won't be hungrier
all day, you'll be hungrier during the earlier part of the
day because your metabolism is cranking, which if you've been
skipping breakfast, will be a new sensation. But if you will
feed your hunger during the day, you'll find that your dinner
will naturally become smaller and late-night snack cravings
will stop because you've nourished your body earlier in the
day.
You can also try adding a little fat and/or
protein to your breakfast so that it will sustain you longer.
3)
“I don't like breakfast foods.”
Then eat dinner foods for breakfast!
Honor
your hunger!
When
you're hungry, eat! This will help you avoid what I call “hangover
hunger.” Hangover hunger is the hunger you feel even after you've
eaten and are satisfied that leads to munching and overeating.
Hangover hunger is caused by letting your hunger mount throughout
the day until you feel starving and then scarfing down a big
meal. This will leave you feeling hungry, even after you've
eaten what you need.
Stay
ahead of your hunger.
Eat
smaller meals more frequently. Eat every 3-4 hours. For active
people and athletes, it's more like every 2-3 hours. This does
not mean eat a huge meal every 2-3 hours, just eat enough to
feed your hunger.
